Nairobi Filming / Photography Permit Process

Last week, I had to get a permit to shoot on the streets of Nairobi. The process has changed slightly from the last time I did it so here is an updated process.

1. Filming License from KFCB

You’ll need to use a registered filming agent to obtain a Filming License from the Kenya Film and Classification Board. Find more information here. I have used Zindua and you can reach them on [email protected]. For a day’s photography, fees were Kshs6,000/- to KFCB plus Agent fees.

2. Informing the Police

Write a letter to the Officer Commanding Station of the Police Station with jurisdiction over your filming / photography location. If within Nairobi CBD, it will be Central Police Station on Harry Thuku Road, next to the University of Nairobi.

3. City Hall Urban Planning Department

Once the OCS signs and stamps your letter, go with a copy to the Department of Urban Planning at City Hall Annexe, 4th floor, Muindi Mbingu Street.

4. City Hall Cash Office

They will give you a written invoice which you’ll take to the City Hall Cash Office next door where you will receive a computer-generated invoice.

5. Making the Payment

Pay the required fees at a Cooperative Bank or through a Cooperative Bank Agent. For a day of photography, I paid Kshs3,640/-

6. Payment Verification

Return to the City Hall Cash Office for verification.

Once verification is done, you’re good to go!

  1. This is fine for a professional photographer.
however, what about a casual guy, or indeed a tourist taking photos on their phones or camera????
Looks like a lot of unnecessary hassle.
