How to Obtain a Reimportation Permit from KRA at JKIA

The Kenya Revenue Authority recently issued a directive on declaration of valuable items you intend to return with to Kenya after your departure. Here is the simple process and my experience.

  1. Write a letter detailing the equipment you intend to leave the country with. Include serial numbers if possible. Here is a template you can download. Download
  2. Go to KRA Customs Office at JKIA’s Terminal 1A and present the letter to the Officials there.
  3. You will be directed to pay Kshs760/- at National Bank which is right next to the Customs Office. I paid cash. I am not sure if Mpesa payments are accepted.
  4. Get your receipt and letter stamped.
  5. Fly out.
  6. Return.
  7. Show your list and receipt to the KRA Customs Officials if they ask about your equipment.
