The Case Against Standard Group

Copyright infringement case settled amicably out of court.

While seated in traffic on 27th February 2019, I noticed a familiar photo on the cover page of the day’s Standard newspaper. Traffic started moving before I was able to buy myself a copy to verify if it was actually my image on the cover.

Shoots and meetings that week stopped me from going to buy a back issue from vendors who stock them in town. So several days later, I went to the Standard Group HQ along Mombasa Road and bought myself a copy and verified it was actually my photo on the cover.

I had not licensed the image to the newspaper so I got in touch with JGIP and requested them to pursue the matter on my behalf.

I’m happy to say that this May, after several months of negotiations, we were able to reach an amicable agreement on compensation for the unauthorised use of my image without having to pursue the matter in court.

It’s great to see creatives’ Intellectual Property rights being respected by more companies in Kenya.

Many thanks to JGIP for their work on this case.
