Touring Mozambique’s second most important port city after Maputo.
Location
Beira sits north of where Pungwe and Buzi Rivers pour into the Indian Ocean. It is predominantly flat with temperatures playing in the warm 20s year round. It is an important port city, second in size only to Maputo the Capital. Goods destined to landlocked countries like Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia come through its port.
The Name
Beira was originally called Chiveve after a local river. The name was changed to Beira in honour of Prince Dom Luis Filipe also known as the Prince of Beira, a province in Portugal.
Macuti Beach
One of the more popular ones in Beira. It is made is made famous by it’s lighthouse which has been standing since 1904 and a ship wreck. They make this a very picturesque place to visit.
Praia Nova (New Beach)
Praia Nova hosts Beira’s largest seafood market with fishermen, traders and restauranteurs visiting it daily for the freshest catch from the Indian Ocean. Just like in other African markets, prices are not fixed and are negotiable.
Parque de Infra-Estruturas Verdes da Beira (Beira Green Infrastructure Park)
One of the best green urban infrastructure projects in Africa.
The park features playgrounds for the young and old, football pitches, basketball and tennis courts, cycling tracks, walk board, restaurants and more.
A model to be emulated by many African cities.
Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral
It has welcomed worshippers since 1925. It was heavily damaged by Cyclone Idai and it is nice to see further renovations are ongoing.
