Nairobi joins other world cities in calling for an end to police brutality.
At exactly 1730hrs on 9th June 2020, several Nairobians gathered outside Sarit Centre in Westlands carrying placards denouncing police brutality which has been a major issue in Kenya.
They were here to add their voices and show solidarity with the global movement calling for reforms in how police engage with those they are meant to serve.
The movement was sparked by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, an act of police brutality that was captured on video.
At 1745hrs, those present knelt for 8min, 46secs, the time that a police officer knelt on George Floyd’s neck, ending his life.
Some motorists and passengers showed their support by honking and clapping as they passed the demonstrators.
There has been an increase in the number of recorded police brutality cases in Kenya during the Covid-19 lockdown, with 15 people losing their lives to police and tens more being injured without cause.
The demonstration ended at 1800hrs.
Earlier in the day, I spotted this mural by Bankslave and Detail 7 in Kibera.
FORZA!!!!
