Ken is a fearless influencer I’m proud to call friend.

When working in Uganda several years back, he casually took a photo of a street kid without clothes. That photo made the rounds and a few weeks later, the kid had decent clothes to cover his body.

On seeing how that single photo transformed a life, he quickly quit his job, returned to Kenya, got an internship at Nairobi Chapel and while there, met with a filmmaker who pointed him to the US for a 13-month filmmaking apprenticeship.

Today, through his company Filamujuani, Ken is teaching kids in Kibera how to tell their own stories through film. They’ve worked on a TV series called ‘Zuki’ which they plan to screen in Kibera soon. Charges will be 3/- and 5/- for VIP.

Ken humbles me.

kenyatta day 2009

kenyatta day 2009

I’ve always wanted to attend a national celebration. There must be a very good reason why more than 20,000 Kenyans flock Nyayo Stadium apart from listening to their President.

As a photographer, there’s the opportunity to take shots that give a different perspective on the day. Well, not for me today.

I never had the necessary accreditation so I had to slip into the press area and keep my head low lest the security spot me.

The ceremony was entertaining and well choreographed.

The more random a plot is, the better it is.

Monday: the plot is hatched to go to South Coast via Amboseli and Tsavo.

Tuesday: we meet at Westgate and shop for supplies at Nakumatt.

Wednesday: we hit the road.

Amboseli is teeming with wildlife. Especially elephants.

Tsavo is huge. So huge we saw very few animals.

Tiwi is the undiscovered holiday destination in South Coast.

groove awards 2009

groove awards 2009

I need to reduce my multi tasking and just do one thing at a time.

I started my day deep in Thika at a friend’s mum’s unveiling of the cross, then went to Ngara to order some signs and was late for Groove Awards at KICC.

Being at Groove was the day’s highlight, hands down.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement and performances electric. I got to experiment with different framing techniques.

Today, in a special way, I got to see God direct my photography. All I did was click away – He did the rest.

All glory to you Dad.

Sports photography is a whole new ballgame.

There’s so many elements out of your control, top on the list being how the game turns out.

You position yourself on one side of the field and there’s no action there. You move to where you think there’s more action and the action shifts to where you were.

Lesson: stay put and pray for the action to come your way.

And yes, Kenya trumped Cayman.

The last and first time I was here was in 2004.

This time, we got to organise the trip ourselves, making it more enjoyable. Being able to plan your itinerary especially when you love taking photos is paramount.

Don’t think I’ll ever go for one of those group camping trips again.
