Meet DJ Sparrxx

DJ Sparrxx and I met in July 2007 when doing Mizizi. We were teamed up as prayer partners and we’ve had a high-impact Kingdom friendship ever since. Sparrxx asked me to shoot his profile pics and I agreed. He wanted something different though. It didn’t take long for us to decide to shoot in a …

Kenya’s World Beaters

Being at Kenya’s Olympic trials felt like being in London for the Olympics. The athletes I got to see up close are the very same who will show the world how to run, hog the podium and with medals dangling on their necks, make sure the Kenyan anthem is played over and over again. These …

Nairobi at Dusk

More shots taken from KICC’s helipad. See previous post for the full story. The sun sets quite fast, its like its hurrying to rise elsewhere. There’s hardly any time to change a lens or re-compose your shot when it starts warming Ngong Hills. Excuses aside, enjoy the shots.

Kenya vs Malawi

This was the first time I was going to Kasarani after it was closed for refurbishment in 2010. The date was June 2nd and Kenya were hosting Malawi in a first-leg World Cup qualifier. The security was the tightest I’ve seen at any venue, even where the president is present. It didn’t ruin the atmosphere though.

2012 KCB Safari Rally

After missing the 2012 Rhino Charge because of family commitments, I wasn’t going to miss this year’s Safari. My first motorsports event for the year brings back many memories. There were some scary moments for me on Saturday: I’d positioned myself at a culvert to take shots of the cars catching air as they sped …

Groove Awards 2012

Much respect to the Mo Sound crew for putting together another great event. I can’t wait for Groove to go Africa-wide with the accolades being sought after like Stellars and Doves. And salutations to all the nominees and this year’s winners. It is because of you Kenyan music is flying high on the continent. May …

Lake Naivasha Kingfisher

I took a break from normal work last week and accompanied Team Inflatables on a cycling expedition that took them from Nairobi to Iten via Naivasha, Nakuru and Baringo. I was providing support and taking photos, not cycling.

Impala vs Quins

I finally got a taste of rugby action last Saturday – at the wrong venue. Alan Hicks told me Nondies were playing Strath at Impala and in my absent mindedness, I rocked into RFUEA instead. From the sidelines, I got to watch a great game amidst colourful grammar from a section of the spectators. As …

sara mitaru in concert

Sara and Blackman make a glorious combination. It was the first time I was seeing Sara perform since 2007 and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Kavutha’s cameo was my most memorable moment of the night. The guy on lights was a bit stingy on the watts.

elani in concert

Photography is painting with light. And when there is no or limited lighting, photography becomes a challenge. And to overcome the challenge, I’m forced to shoot at very high ISOs which introduces noise that ruins the music. (Get it?) What I love about Elani is that they have fun when doing what they love.

groove awards 2011

At the 2009 Groove Awards is where I believe I discovered my skills in concert photography. I’ve become a regular attendee since. Mo Sound do a great job in putting the event together. Their level of professionalism is impeccable. My only suggestion is they move the red carpet to a place where we photographers don’t …

mission katsangani 2011

You won’t find it on Google Maps, so here goes: Drive 80km north of Malindi to a trading centre called Mwenda Pole. Board a boda boda and after about 20 minutes, you’ll be in the heart of Katsangani, an island in the Tana Delta. I was here in 2010 to spread the Gospel with the …

sofapaka vs sony

Friends like Mavuno’s Kenyatta Otieno are God-sent. He always tells me when there’s a big game happening. He’s such a football fan – a true Sofapaka fan. Sofapaka (my team) met Sony today in a Super 8 duel which they won 2-1. Didn’t snap many great photos tonight but I’m happy I got to click …

nairobi by night

September 2007 was the first time I took photos of Nairobi by night. I hooked up with Fadzter, Makumi, Francuso and Ken, got a 2-day shooting permit for Kshs10,000/- from DFS, informed the cops at Central Police and over a Friday and Saturday night, walked around Nairobi CBD taking photos. We had so much fun …

The Villagers Band Live at Burudani

This has got to be the most jamming I’ve done in a while. At some point I had to put my camera down and join in the dancing. What I love about The Villagers is that they entertain without gimmicks like ‘Weka mikono juu!’ and ‘Everybody to the left… to the right…’ And begenge has …

supersport dstv cup

I’m still fine-tuning my skills in sport photography. A lesson I have come to embrace is ‘Position yourself at one place and patiently wait for the action to come to you.’ If you move from place to place, you won’t get good shots. The sun was shining today allowing faster shutter speeds at low ISOs, …

sofapaka vs aviacao

I’m glad I carried my 70-200 f/2.8L with me today. After the first half, the heavens opened up and as it poured, all lighting disappeared. The 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS was of no use. Thank God for the superior weather sealing on the 7D and L lenses. I had to venture out of the pervious shelter I …

All That Jazz

This is my first musical gig this year. Before the year ends, I want to take my concert photography to the next level. I feel I have sort of stagnated and need more divine creativity to get to where no one else has been.
