Administration of the malaria vaccine during routine clinic visits for children under two is already yielding positive results in the fight against malaria in countries like Cameroon.
Here’s the story of how this intervention, led by Unitaid, Plus Project and Population Services International has reduced malaria infections in children under two.
With French being widely spoken in Cameroon and other countries in Africa, having multi lingual partners in the PSI Cameroon team and a French translator based in Nairobi helped me deliver the same documentary in French as well.
Administering the Malaria Vaccine in Health Facilities
The malaria vaccine is currently being administered in health facilities as part of regular clinic services for children under two.

Integrating malaria vaccine administration into regular clinic visits for newborns has led to increased vaccine uptake at minimal cost because existing health systems and personnel are being utilised for this.
World Malaria Day 2025 Celebrations in Bafia, Cameroon
My visit to Cameroon coincided with a community outreach event that was part of the World Malaria Day celebrations in Bafia.
Mothers, fathers and their babies came in early. Throughout the morning, there was administration of regular clinic services – checkups, medication and health talks – and malaria vaccine administration for children under two.

The event started with a dance competition for mothers. The lady in a red skirt won and received Plus Project merchandise.

Taking the malaria vaccine to the people
Administration of the malaria vaccine was originally designed to be done only at health facilities. This was changed during the co-design process to include administration by community health workers.
I got to accompany Dolly Moute who visited a family that lives far from a health facility to administer the malaria vaccine to a child there.

Bafia, Cameroon
Bafia is about two hours north of Yaounde. The road there is smooth and tarred with ongoing expansions.
Bafia has lots of trees all over town and in the villages. The air here is fresh and clean.

At the end of the day, what we’re pushing for is to have healthy children protected from malaria.
