Kenya started her campaign to win CHAN2024 on a celebratory note as they defeated Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in their opening match at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani on 3rd August 2025.

This is what the stadium looked like, 90 minutes to kick off. It did eventually fill up, but not to capacity.

When it came to cheering, the Congolese did have the upper hand. They were energetic and loud, despite their small numbers.

The hosts too were high in spirits. They welcomed their EAC brothers and sisters and when the pleasantries were over, they cheered their flag and taunted their neighbours.

For me, this was the first time shooting professional football in over 13 years, and it was great being in the company of legends, and a pleasure making friends with photographers from DRC.

Harambee Stars from Kenya.

The Leopards from Congo DR.

Seven minutes into the first half, Jephte Kitambala Bola who plays for AS Maniema Union found the back of Kenya’s net. But the celebrations were brought to a halt as a foul had already been called by the referee before his kick.

Kenya had the upper hand during the first half, keeping Congo DR to their half of the pitch.

Austine Odhiambo Otieno who plays for Gor Mahia FC scored Kenya’s first and only goal of the match before the break.

The crowd went wild!!

After the break, the DR Congo Leopards were more energetic and ready to bite back.

But Kenya were strong in defence, making sure goal keeper Bryne Omondi who plays for Bandari FC went home relieved.

It was a great start to Kenya’s campaign to lift her first CHAN trophy. The crowds were happy, and the players happier at the bank, after President William Ruto promised them 1 million Kenya shillings each (US $ 7,700) for every win they had at the tournament.
And seeing that I am not a player…
