To commemorate a year since the momentous June 25th 2024 anti finance bill demonstrations, Kenyans took to the streets of Nairobi in honour of over 60 Kenyans killed by authorities during anti government demonstrations in 2024.

The demonstrations, held in major towns across the country, had citizens expressing their dissatisfaction at how the government was running the country’s affairs.

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah joined the demonstrations and was teargassed just like the other demonstrators.

These demonstrators were peaceful and playing football along Kenyatta Avenue but were later chased by the police using tear gas.

I spotted this gentleman outside Bank of India, unmoved by the chaos that surrounded him.

Police marched the streets breaking up any gathering the protesters made.

Protesters responded as expected.

Sometimes, the police scored own goals.

Shooting demonstrations can never be a solo job. You need someone to walk with you, encourage you when you’re tired and most importantly, watch your back.
A day before demos, I usually get in touch with another photographer and plan where to meet and start the coverage. Usually, we’ll meet others in the same area and work as a fluid team, shooting from behind the cops or in the midst of the demonstrators.
This is part of the team what I was with today. There were more photographers who were shooting from other locations at the time the photo was taken by Sarabi, a journalism student who was kind enough to do us the honours.

Mwarv, excellence in journalism.
Thank you.
