After another year of radicalisation by their government, Kenyans took to the streets of Nairobi on Tuesday 17th June 2025 to express their dissatisfaction with the political leadership of the country and protest against police brutality after Albert Ojwang, a teacher and blogger, was arrested and killed while in police custody.

I arrived in Nairobi’s CBD at around 12.30pm to find two sets of goons having running battles along Moi Avenue. One group appeared to have the backing of the police.

Protest Anthem
In the absence of placards, demonstrators used their voices to send a message that they are united.
Brutality for Brutality
The demonstrations, held to call for an end to police brutality were met with *checks notes* police brutality.

Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, a hawker who was selling masks, was shot at point blank by a police officer. He wasn’t demonstrating. He was out here trying to make a living in the midst of the chaos.

The rage that followed was understandable.

Taking advantage of the situation, thugs raided a shop selling electronics along Kenyatta Avenue and mad away with valuables.
