Anti-Government Protests in Nairobi

In June, July and August 2024, Kenyans of all ages took to the streets of their respective towns to express their dissatisfaction with the country’s political leadership. This gallery is a collection of some of the images I got to capture during the demonstrations in Nairobi.

18th June 2024

These demonstrations were very peaceful. Police used teargas to disperse demonstrators and many got arrested.

20th June 2024

Another day of peaceful demonstrations with police responding with teargas and arrests. This time, the police also used water canons to keep back the demonstrators.

25th June 2024

This was the largest of the demos yet. It was on the day MPs were voting on the 2024 Finance Bill which was one of the major concerns the demonstrators were marching against. Still, the MPs voted to adopt the bill. Demonstrators also breached Parliament Buildings on this day. Also on this day, goons infiltrated the movement trying to discredit the cause.

2nd July 2024 #OccupyCBD

Police changed tact and blocked roads leading into Nairobi CBD, thereby denying thousands their right to demonstrate peacefully. Somehow, the goons made it into CBD where they looted many businesses.

Nane Nane March

Again, police kept demonstrators away from Nairobi CBD. Those who made it were not allowed to gather and picket peacefully.
