A State Funeral was held for Kenya’s third president, Emilio Mwai Kibaki, on 29th April 2022 at Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium. These are some of the moments that I got to capture.

This was the second state funeral I was covering, the first being Daniel Toroitich arap Moi’s.

Below is a behind the scenes look at the photography you are about to see.

My coverage started along Uhuru Highway, under the just completed Nairobi Expressway which had been closed to traffic for security reasons.

Underneath, police in ceremonial attire lined the route where Mwai Kibaki’s cortege would use from State House Nairobi to Nyayo National Stadium.

For others, it was business as usual.

Moments before 10.30am, we spotted the cortege approaching the Haile Selassie roundabout, then work started in earnest.

The cortege took a lap of honour inside Nyayo National Stadium, allowing the thousands present to pay their last respects.
