At the start of 2021, I wanted to take some time off work to plan for the year ahead. A friend recommended Castle Forest Lodge. I’m glad I listened to him.
Getting There.
Located in Kimunye, Kirinyaga County, Castle Forest Lodge is very easy to get to and Google Maps makes sure you get there without getting lost. The roads from Nairobi are all smooth tarmac and the journey there takes about 2 and a half hours.
As you drive into Mt Kenya Forest, you’ll see this fall just as you go over a bridge. It begged to be shot so I obliged.
The flowers in the forest are wild and beautiful.
Historic Lodge.
Built in 1910 using stones and wood from the surrounding forest, the main building at the Lodge is over 100 years old but is still standing strong and majestic.
Some renovations were done in 2000 but the Lodge hasn’t lost it’s rustic nature.
There are different accommodation options. I chose the bandas because I was alone. Cottages for families including those who’d like to cater for themselves are available.
Waterfalls.
A visit to Castle Forest Lodge isn’t complete without a visit to the waterfalls.
This one is right next to the Lodge. Small but scenic.
Kamweti Falls are about an hour and a half from the Lodge by foot. It is a very comfortable walk through the forest with birds singing different tunes making it a musical hike.
Night time.
At night, when it’s clear, the Lodge transforms into a billion star hotel.
I’d recommend Castle Forest Lodge for anyone looking for some peace, quiet and relaxation. Their chef throws down on every meal (I cleared my meals before I could shoot) and the staff are very friendly.
