I also didn’t know such a lake existed. So I did the Thomas thing, and travelled to Lamu County to see it for myself.
If you ever find yourself in Mpeketoni with a couple of minutes to spare, I’ll advise you to visit this fresh water lake, just a few minutes out of town. Also known as Lake Mukunganya, it is home to several birds, fish, hippos and other wildlife.
The lake made it to the headlines after it dried up two years ago due to a drought. It is good to see it with so much life now.
Sunsets here are quite something, with the sound of the waves hitting the shore and birds going home to roost providing the perfect acoustic accompaniment.
Accessing the lake is free, all you’ll need is to find your way there. And for that, I will be your friend.
To get to Mpeketoni, you can take a bus or speed boat from Lamu. If by boat, you’ll need to organise for a vehicle to take you to Mpeketoni from Kizuke Jetty.
When in Mpeketoni, you can stay at British Guest House (+254 716 515615). They have clean spacious rooms and free wifi. They make excellent fish but since it’s a la carte, give them an hour to prepare it.
From the hotel, you can take a taxi or boda boda to Lake Kenyatta. It is just past the Kenya Wildlife Services camp.
