kenya cup finals

Over the years, I’ve learnt that when it comes to sports journalism, I need to pick a spot and pray the action comes towards me. If I move around the sidelines looking for action, there will be a greater likelihood of me missing the action altogether.

I took these at the Kenya Cup finals on 17th April 2010. More good photos I found as I continue cataloging my photos.

Nairobi Cinema is a good auditorium for music events though the lighting doesn’t allow you to do much with photography.

So for Acoustic Worship, I had to look for a different angle to tell the story. I’m thankful that the organisers had no restrictions on movements on stage which allowed me to get these shots.

the afropolitan shoot

the afropolitan shoot

This was my first proper fashion shoot. It makes me respect the likes of Mutua Matheka and Steve Kitots who do glamour shoots at the blink of an eye.

Afropolitan sells African jewelry, accessories and shoes for the cosmopolitan lady.Bev, the fearless influencer who runs Afopolitan is a world citizen, shuttling with ease between continents leaving a bag of charm wherever she goes. We met when she was taking the one-year Discovery programme at Mavuno Church.

Arboretum was the perfect location for the look Bev wanted. But the African sun, on the equator, lived up to it’s fame of falling other than setting. One minute we were using flash to kill shadows, another we were lighting the whole scene!

I had a lot of fun working with the models too and can’t wait for the Afropolitan site to be up!

There’s a special anointing of sorts on my friends this year – so many getting married!

And the latest are Tony and Faith. A super talented brother who’s going to make it super big in film and his equally talented, always standing by her man wife.

Highlight of the wedding was the mdundiko at the reception, thanks to Krowbar.

nairobi by night

nairobi by night

September 2007 was the first time I took photos of Nairobi by night.

I hooked up with Fadzter, Makumi, Francuso and Ken, got a 2-day shooting permit for Kshs10,000/- from DFS, informed the cops at Central Police and over a Friday and Saturday night, walked around Nairobi CBD taking photos. We had so much fun and agreed to repeat the excitement but wapi

Three years later, inspired by the works of trigger-happy oneTOUCHers, I went to the KICC helipad today to take more shots of this beautiful city.

My GHC teacher was right – it gets cooler the higher you go. The wind was human-bending strong and since I hadn’t carried a jacket, I kept jumping on the spot in-between exposures to keep warm.

My Commerce teacher was right too – the view is better from the top.

the villagers live at burudani

This has got to be the most jamming I’ve done in a while.

At some point I had to put my camera down and join in the dancing.

What I love about The Villagers is that they entertain without gimmicks like ‘Weka mikono juu!’ and ‘Everybody to the left… to the right…’ And begenge has to be the best new sound this side of Nokia 3310.

The Brookhouse School students did well on lighting. The small glitches in sound didn’t dampen the party.

The Villagers rock!

I’m still fine-tuning my skills in sport photography.

A lesson I have come to embrace is ‘Position yourself at one place and patiently wait for the action to come to you.’ If you move from place to place, you won’t get good shots.

The sun was shining today allowing faster shutter speeds at low ISOs, unlike last Sunday when the heavens opened up.

Sofapaka took the day with a 1 – 0 win over Ulinzi.

I’m glad I carried my 70-200 f/2.8L with me today.

After the first half, the heavens opened up and as it poured, all lighting disappeared. The 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS was of no use.

Thank God for the superior weather sealing on the 7D and L lenses. I had to venture out of the pervious shelter I was under to get some action.

By the way, if God made us from soil, how come we don’t turn into mud when it rains?

all that jazz

This is my first musical gig this year.

Before the year ends, I want to take my concert photography to the next level. I feel I have sort of stagnated and need more divine creativity to get to where no one else has been.

All That Jazz was all that and a sack of potatoes.

Love. Paul was right in calling it ‘the greatest’ in 1 Corinthians 13.

I didn’t feel like I was working today. It was a great pleasure playing witness to the union of two believers.

There was joy in heaven and amongst we the witnesses here on earth.

Thanks Ciru and Bo for inviting me to share in your joy.

God is God. Yaani…

I got to Lake Naivasha Country Club at 11am for a wedding that was to start at 3pm. The weather was beautiful until the clouds invaded and the rain poured. Heavily.

There were some delays in the start of the ceremony so by the time we were going for the photo session at 6pm, there was no sun plus it was cloudy. And despite that, God proved ‘impossible’ isn’t in His vocabulary.

I took some of the best shots I’ve taken at a wedding despite conditions that didn’t favour photography.

All glory to you Dad.

If you haven’t been to a floodlit KPL game, you are missing on the most fun 100/- can get you. When you finally do, don’t go to the hoity toity VIP section; ask to be directed to  ‘Russia’. You will enjoy being with the ardent fans and will laugh at the comments they direct towards the pitch.

Now to the photography bit: if you don’t have a super fast telephoto, you will struggle taking photos at the floodlit games. Seriously, you will.

The camera doesn’t see those flood lights well so if you have a friend who has a fast telephoto with stabilizer, beg, borrow but don’t steal their lens before attending the game.

Prayer works. It really does.

A few minutes before Jal’s arrival at the KWELI offices, the flash on my 7D jammed. I needed it to remotely trigger my 430 EX speedlight. Nothing I did was working so I decided to make my faith practical. Wycliffe placed his hands on the camera and a few mintes later, the flash popped!

I really enjoyed being with Jal. For a man with so much clout in the world, it’s amazing to to have a casual conversation with him. He is so real!

And he is definitely going places.

Ken is a fearless influencer I’m proud to call friend.

When working in Uganda several years back, he casually took a photo of a street kid without clothes. That photo made the rounds and a few weeks later, the kid had decent clothes to cover his body.

On seeing how that single photo transformed a life, he quickly quit his job, returned to Kenya, got an internship at Nairobi Chapel and while there, met with a filmmaker who pointed him to the US for a 13-month filmmaking apprenticeship.

Today, through his company Filamujuani, Ken is teaching kids in Kibera how to tell their own stories through film. They’ve worked on a TV series called ‘Zuki’ which they plan to screen in Kibera soon. Charges will be 3/- and 5/- for VIP.

Ken humbles me.
