safaricom classical fusion concert

safaricom classical fusion concert

Happy accidents can be rare in photography. You know, when you weren’t intending to capture something then you go like ‘Wow! Me likey!’ after checking out the photo you’ve taken.

This happened at the Safaricom Classical Fusion grand concert. I couldn’t get to a position where I could capture the face of the conductor, Duncan Wambugu, because of security restrictions around the stage. In addition, my old 40D doesn’t handle exposure like the 7D so when I took the photo below, I wasn’t happy, until much later when it came to selecting photos to upload to KWELI’s Facebook Page.

Me likey!

hands in worship

hands in worship

I got to attend Israel Houghton’s concert at Central Park on 15th August 2010 and took over 1,400 photos that I’d never taken the time to go through.

When I finally did today, these sequence of hands caught my eye.

I don’t know to whom they belong but you can clearly tell the difference between hands raised in surrender to the Almighty vs to a thug.

Sara and Blackman make a glorious combination.

It was the first time I was seeing Sara perform since 2007 and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Kavutha’s cameo was my most memorable moment of the night.

The guy on lights was a bit stingy on the watts.

Photography is painting with light. And when there is no or limited lighting, photography becomes a challenge.

And to overcome the challenge, I’m forced to shoot at very high ISOs which introduces noise that ruins the music. (Get it?)

What I love about Elani is that they have fun when doing what they love.

groove awards 2011

groove awards 2011

At the 2009 Groove Awards is where I believe I discovered my skills in concert photography. I’ve become a regular attendee since.

Mo Sound do a great job in putting the event together. Their level of professionalism is impeccable. My only suggestion is they move the red carpet to a place where we photographers don’t have to fight with the sun – we always loose.

Highlight of the day, Daddy Owen giving his Male Artist of the Year award to Juliani – grown men do cry.

the villagers live at burudani

the villagers live at burudani

This has got to be the most jamming I’ve done in a while.

At some point I had to put my camera down and join in the dancing.

What I love about The Villagers is that they entertain without gimmicks like ‘Weka mikono juu!’ and ‘Everybody to the left… to the right…’ And begenge has to be the best new sound this side of Nokia 3310.

The Brookhouse School students did well on lighting. The small glitches in sound didn’t dampen the party.

The Villagers rock!

sol filosofia launch concert

sol filosofia launch concert

I purchased this album at Aaron’s All That Jazz gig in January and it’s been on replay ever since. My favourite track is Sol Generation – it thumps in my head many times each week.

Having shot many concerts at Alliance Francaise de Nairobi, I was looking for a different angle to tell my story. And I did. From the third floor balcony.

It was a lovely concert though packed like a free Nyayo Bus. I enjoyed shooting with @dipwiz and @SunnyNjeri.

all that jazz

This is my first musical gig this year.

Before the year ends, I want to take my concert photography to the next level. I feel I have sort of stagnated and need more divine creativity to get to where no one else has been.

All That Jazz was all that and a sack of potatoes.

kanjii vs eric round two

kanjii vs eric round two

Their first battle about two years ago was quite an entertainer.

Today’s was epic.

Two of Kenya’s top performers, each with their own bands, on one stage? I didn’t expect anything less.

I think Kanjii won this one.

kidepo live

Whether you attended the show or not, you need to get Qwela’s album Kidepo.

They are definitely Uganda’s finest Afro fusion group – hands down!

Sad they performed only two songs because problems with sound meant the concert started late and the restrictions of the Nema license had to be observed.

benganology launch

The first time I met Chizi was in 2007 when he was leading worship at Mavuno Downtown. He was different. Through his leadership, worship was real. I’m not a Premier League fan but loved how he started worship with a recap of Saturday’s big games.

Then in 2008 I bought his debut album Suluwe and gave him mad props. It was a masterpiece produced by Blackman. It’s an album you’ll definitely enjoy.

After a long wait, he launched his second album today. It’s different but still as enjoyable as the first.

the emmanuel jal shoot

the emmanuel jal shoot

Prayer works. It really does.

A few minutes before Jal’s arrival at the KWELI offices, the flash on my 7D jammed. I needed it to remotely trigger my 430 EX speedlight. Nothing I did was working so I decided to make my faith practical. Wycliffe placed his hands on the camera and a few mintes later, the flash popped!

I really enjoyed being with Jal. For a man with so much clout in the world, it’s amazing to to have a casual conversation with him. He is so real!

And he is definitely going places.

Since my beloved isn’t around, I celebrated my love for photography at Love is Kenya.

I’ve never taken photos at the National Museum. I think this was the first gig being held here.

The organisers did a great job with the lighting. The musicians were even better on stage.

happy new 2010

happy new 2010

Came back from SA on 30th with a finger itching for action.

My mission was to hit all the parties celebrating God’s love as we ushered in 2010.

I started off at Hellon’s at about 8pm. They were running late for a gig that was to start at 7pm. I moved on to KICC for Groove Party which was alive and happening. I crossed into Mavuno Dome for Exit Strategy, and returned to KICC for the fireworks. From there it was over to Nairobi Chapel for TSO.

The most fun part was shooting fireworks at Groove Party.

groove awards 2009

groove awards 2009

I need to reduce my multi tasking and just do one thing at a time.

I started my day deep in Thika at a friend’s mum’s unveiling of the cross, then went to Ngara to order some signs and was late for Groove Awards at KICC.

Being at Groove was the day’s highlight, hands down.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement and performances electric. I got to experiment with different framing techniques.

Today, in a special way, I got to see God direct my photography. All I did was click away – He did the rest.

All glory to you Dad.
