World Elephant Day

World Elephant Day

The illegal trade in ivory kills up to 40,000 elephants in Africa each year.

That is 5 elephants, every hour, every day, every month, for 12 months!

That is around one every 12 minutes!

It’s not just the animals that are dying. While working to conserve elephant populations in Kenya, two KWS rangers were recently felled by poachers.

I thank God for organisations like KWSIFAW and David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust that are active in protecting the elephants, because if they don’t continue with their conservation efforts, estimates say photos like these below will be the only elephants we see in 20 years.

Live Green Screen Photography

Live Green Screen Photography

The Niko na Safaricom Live concert directors had an idea that many said couldn’t be done. We listened to them, planned how to and did it.

Every year, Safaricom promote their brand through countrywide music concerts dubbed Niko na Safaricom Live. They get the top music artists and have them perform in major towns with fans in their thousands showing up to see them live.

For the launch of the 2013 edition at Carnivore Gardens, event directors Kijiji Entertainment had a street theme running, complete with matatus, hawkers, shoe shiners and the notorious CCN askaris occasionally chasing after the hawkers. For photography, they had an idea that others said was impossible to execute. To extend the street experience, Kijiji wanted photos of guests taken at the venue superimposed on city street backgrounds, and delivered the same night of the event. We accepted the challenge and got down to work.

Days before the launch, we took different shots of Nairobi streets at night.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park

Its amazing what we have in the backyard of this great city we call Nairobi – the only capital with a National Park!

Spent a couple of hours there two weeks ago hoping to spot the lions but wasn’t successful. I did however have a great time there despite getting lost for several minutes while looking for a good spot to shoot the sunset from.

Ol Pejeta Wildlife

Ol Pejeta Wildlife

This week, allow me to take you back to the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and the only place you can see chimpanzees in Kenya.

There’s lots of other wildlife to be seen in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. It is one of the few places you can see the big five.

Earlier, I shared about the elephants and chimpanzees. Let me share photos from some of the other wildlife I got to see while there.

Buffaloes are known to attack with no provocation. So maintain your distance when you see one.

My wife and I were blessed to spot two cheetahs playing in the shade as they sheltered from the midday heat. One of them got up, went round the bush and that is how I got the shot below.

In photography, anticipation is key to getting great shots.

Ol_Pejeta_Animals-Jackal

This was the first time spotting a jackal since Carlos. He saw us, darted across the road several metres ahead of us and started running away. Again, I anticipated – and prayed – and he paused for this shot. A couple of seconds is all I had and he was gone.

Good Night Nairobi, Pt 2

Last Tuesday evening, I hooked up with Steve Kitots and Mutua Matheka on a hurriedly-put-together shoot of Nairobi from street level.

Steve and I scouted for a good spot where we could position ourself and we picked the junction of Koinange Street and Kenyatta Avenue and were joined by Mutua just as we set up.

We spent about 30 minutes shooting as buses and other fast-moving traffic whizzed past us.

As we packed up, we spotted KICC lit up for the Rockefeller Foundation’s Centenary Celebrations and shot that as well.

We high-fived each other, went to our different homes and let Nairobi sleep in peace.

Mt Kenya Sunrise

I spent four years schooling on the slopes of Mt Kenya and I can’t recall mustering the courage to brave the morning chill to get a glimpse of the sunrise over Kenya’s highest mountain. The blankets were either too heavy or a certain magnetic force always pinned me down to my bed around sunrise.

Apart from the morning chill, there is cloud cover to contend with when attempting to shoot a sunrise over Kirinyaga. Lenana and Batian are very shy, spending most of their times hiding behind a thick blanket of clouds.

But two weeks ago, God smiled upon me and I was finally able to capture two sunrises – back to back – while staying at Serena Sweetwaters in Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

My fascination with elephants continues this week after an encounter with several while at Ol Pejeta Conservancy last week.

Elephants here are many in number and were easy to spot as they enjoyed the lush vegetation from the ongoing rains.

The first and last shots below were taken at the watering hole at Serena Sweetwaters.

On one of the nights, we had lions visiting the watering hole. Elephants were the only animals brave enough to stand their ground as impala, waterbucks, warthogs, zebras and gazelles avoided being dinner by hiding far, far away, only to return the next morning when the coast was clear.

I had the rare privilege last week of visiting a Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Ol Pejeta Sanctuary. It is one of the few places where you can see chimpanzees in the wild in Kenya, and appreciate how human-like they are. We are so alike that we share 98.4% of our DNA!

The sanctuary started in 1993 as a refuge for three chimps rescued from civil war in Burundi, and is now home to more than forty chimpanzees, rescued from abuse in Central and West Africa where they have been used as pets and almost dinner in illegal bush meat trade.

Open to the public from 0900 to 1030hrs and 1500hrs to 1630hrs, the sanctuary is a must-see for anyone visiting Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

You can find out more about the sanctuary and support it here.

This beautiful city never sleeps. For every eye that shuts at the end of a busy day, another opens to admire the star-lit beauty of Nairobi.

This is the first part of a series examining the activities that go on in Kenya’s capital after dark. I’ll be posting more photos over the next couple of months.

For this instalment, I had the privilege of shooting with @truthslinger. We were later joined by @iWIDEkimani  who pushed his point and shoot to the limit.

These were shot around Kenyatta Avenue on a cold March night, with no disturbance from Council authorities, and the curious stare of Nairobians going home from work and school.

Sports photography presents challenges that attract me like a finger to an itch. The only thing that keeps me from fulfilling my itch is time.

So when I had a couple of free hours before church today, I couldn’t resist the urge to chase pro and amateur cyclists on their 20km individual time trial on the Ndumberi – Limuru road.

Shooting on a route lined with many coffe estates that provided great scenic backgrounds, plus ideal cloud cover that filtered the sun to just the right intensity, makes me believe I had more fun with my Canons than cyclists on they Canyons but in need of a serious work out like some of the cyclists who were panting and wheezing at the finish line.

Good Morning Nairobi

Today I celebrate a new dawn for our republic.

We as Kenyans have proven to the world that we have matured politically and can exercise our democratic rights peacefully.

A lot has been written about the elections, but here is one of the more interesting reads: http://shutterdiplomacy.com/2013/03/10/oh-my-god-not-another-kikuyu-president/

These photos were taken on the morning of 4th March 2013. It was indeed a new dawn for Kenya.

Today, after a self-imposed week of being glued to TV, we get back to work and build our nation.

We made history today by voting in the first elections under a new constitution, and going against the international media’s prophesies of fighting each other.

To show the naysayers that Kenya has moved on from 2007’s chaos, I joined Mutua and Efi at seven polling stations in Nairobi and saw thousands of Kenyans choosing peace.

It’s not too late to wish you a happy new year, is it?

Today’s shots were taken as 2013 broke over Diani Beach where I was camped with Onetouchers on our first #ShootingAfrica expedition.

I didn’t think there would be a glorious sunrise as these are hard to come by along the coast because of generous cloud cover in the mornings. But this one was special. The sun was bold, giving light to what is going to be a great jubilee year for Kenya.

Jamhuri Day 2012

Jamhuri Day 2012

Today’s celebrations were special for two reasons: these were Mwai Kibaki’s last national celebrations as President, and they marked the start of Kenya’s year of jubilee.

I received favour from God in two distinct ways: being able to get a last-minute media pass to join other photographers at the designated area in Nyayo National Stadium, and great weather which made  photography a pleasure.

Kisite Marine Park

Kisite Marine Park

This was one of the highlights of my recent trip to the Kenyan coast.

You can access KWS-managed Kisite Marine Park via Shimoni which is about 80km south of Mombasa. Dolphin Dhow organise private visits to the park that include breakfast and sea food lunch on the dhow.

I’d always heard stories about dolphins being spotted in the Kenyan Indian Ocean waters and finally got to see it for myself. I saw just one coz I guess it was a Monday and all the rest were taking a break after a busy weekend entertaining tourists but it was worth it. Flipper swam alongside our dhow for quite a distance and then retreated – I guess to join his relaxing buddies. I then proceeded to snorkel in the Kisite corals and saw God’s handiwork in full technicolor display.

The God of all creation has indeed blessed our land and nation.

Tiwi Beach

Peaceful Tiwi is located about 20km south of Mombasa, and just 5km before Ukunda. It has clean, white beaches devoid of beach boys or traders trying to sell you trinkets and merchandise.

You should consider it as an alternative to the heavily populated Diani or Mombasa beaches on your next visit to Kenya’s coast.

If camping is how you like to do it, get to Twiga Lodge. Their campsite is right at the beach!

Driving on the A23

Driving on the A23

After handling an assignment in Arusha recently, I needed to join friends from ARK in Tiwi, about 15km south of Mombasa. I chose the quickest route which took me past Moshi, back into Kenya via Taveta, then Voi, Mombasa and finally on Tiwi’s white beaches.

The Taveta – Voi highway is currently under construction but most of it remains not a road really, but a stretch of reddish-brown earth devoid of vegetation. Known as the A23, it is avoided by most motorists due to its state, making it quite lonely to drive on. In fact, I met only four other cars on the 100km stretch that had me swerving from one side of the road to the other at will, depending on which was smoother.

My highlight of the journey was driving through the vast Tsavo West National Park. It is quite a beauty. Apart from the breathtaking landscapes, God indulged me in spotting several animals including a family of elephants!

Maranga Darling Tribute Concert

Maranga Darling Tribute Concert

I can’t say I knew Maranga much. We did get to meet at a couple of concerts and he was always in a do rag, a camera slung on his shoulder. He had a simple point and shoot when we met at Hillcrest for Blankets and Wine on 7th March 2010 which had grown into a powerful Canon the last time we met at a concert at Alliance Francaise earlier this year. The little interaction we had about photography was enough for him to have a memorable impact in my life. The greatest impact however came with his departure to be with our Saviour.

Maranga’s tribute concert at The National Theatre last evening was full of family, friends and acquaintances who spoke highly of him as a brother, leader, entertainer, editor, director, funny man and above all, son of the Most High. It got me wondering: what kind of influence am I having with my life? Am I serving my God-given purpose? When I finally go home, will God say, “Well done my son. Great is your reward.”

Oh, how I’d like to hear those words. How I’d like you to hear those sweet words.

Watching Kenyatta

Watching Kenyatta

Last Saturday evening, I got to attend Just-A-Band’s Sorry for the Delay album launch at KICC. You can purchase the album here.

Despite the slight drizzle, JAB put together a good apology for the late release of their album. It was a fantastic show.

Before the show started, I decided to take advantage of the location to photograph Jomo Kenyatta’s statue. These were long exposures in perfect weather. I especially loved the lens flares in the second photo and JAB’s rendition of The Cavalier Band’s ‘Dunia ina Mambo’.
