Sneaking up on a Rhino to Photograph it

I’ve done some crazy things to get a good photo; this was the wildest!

The first time I was in Sera Conservancy was April 2017 during a OnetouchLive trip. Sera is the only community conservancy in East Africa with a sanctuary for the endangered black rhino. What makes Sera ideal are it’s vegetation and climate which are black rhino paradise.

An opportunity opened up to return to Sera in early December 2017 and I couldn’t say no. This time, I went fully prepared.

Before we started tracking, the rangers instructed us to walk in a single file, and to keep very quiet. What rhinos lack in great eye sight they make up for in smell and hearing.

The rhinos are tagged so as we walked through the bushes, the ranger would stop after a couple of metres and listen to the signal being picked by his hand-held antennae. It wasn’t long before we chanced upon what we were looking for.
