Shooting the Acorn Documentary

Since 2006, I’ve been part of one of the most brilliant creative teams in Africa. Over the years, we have delivered some of the most impactful campaigns on different media, all informed by sound strategy. You can see some of the projects we’ve worked on here.

Several weeks ago, we were asked to create a documentary for Acorn Group, who started off as a construction management company more than ten years ago, but in response to current and future socio-economic needs, have now moved to investment-grade real estate development. The documentary was to not only inform industry players and investors on what Acorn was doing, but also inspire them into believing in Acorn’s vision.

This project excited me for two reasons: rarely does one get to tell a success story of a game-changing African company, and this was one important opportunity. Secondly, it was a chance to show what happens when creative minds bring their A game to a project.

Here are some behind the scenes shots I took with my phone.

This was as we shot Dr David Ndii, a very sharp guy on things economics.

On the streets of Nairobi we got to get Mutua Matheka’s take on the city he loves photographing. If you’ve been trapped in a cave and have no idea who he is, find out here.

Acorn_Group_Documentary-96We used LED panels to light the scene above.

This was as we interviewed Edward Kirathe, the Acorn Group CEO – a visionary who has passion for what he is doing.

We shot some of the cutaways in Rongai…

Shooting was done over five days using Allan’s Nikon D600 with a Ninja Blade, my Canon 7D and a DJI Phantom Vision for the aerial shots which were impossible to shoot using a D-SLR. 3D animation and graphics were done by Bugi Kaigwa, sound by Habib from Zindua, editing by Justin Wachira and music by Jazz Odongo.

Here’s the final product.
