African Screens – The Road Ahead

This image from Turkana graces the 53rd issue of the African Screens Wallpaper Series. This means you can now have a different wallpaper for your device every week for a whole year! When the series started in June 2013, I thought it would be easy. I went through my library of images, selected about 80 that could make great wallpapers and without much planning, hit the internet superhighway, only to find bumps, barriers and detours.

A few weeks into the series, I realised not just any beautiful image can make a wallpaper. Because of icons that populate our screens, a good wallpaper should stand out without being intrusive; it should not call for attention to the point of distracting you from the icon you’re looking for. I also realised posting a new wallpaper image every week can be tiring, that’s why I lagged behind on some weeks. The appreciation received is little and very spaced out. It is however very encouraging when you see your image being used by a friend or stranger as a wallpaper, or find someone retweeting a link to the week’s wallpaper. It brings the satisfaction of knowing I’m not the only one who appreciates how blessed Africa is.

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon the story of the Windows ‘Bliss’ Wallpaper.

This encouraged me to keep shooting like no one’s looking and sharing my work like Africa depended on it.

So here’s to a many more 53 weeks of the Africa Screens Wallpaper Series.
